Fighting
the Fear of Milk Fat .. At the Nova
Scotia Agricultural College, Dr.
Chaouki Benchaar, a researcher
working with Agriculture and
Agri-Food Canada, believes that
the micro-nutritional benefits of
milk fat outweigh the risks of
saturated fat. He is investigating
natural methods of increasing the
amount of CLA and omega-3 fatty

Antibody
Cocktail Targets Deadly Foodborne
Germs. In
the future, consumers may be
adding a powerful
"spice" to their food
that could save lives. Researchers
at the University of Alberta are
developing a natural antibody
cocktail that can help prevent the
most common foodborne germs,
including E. coli and Salmonella,
which cause thousands to become
sick or die each year. moreNova

Smells Sweet..
At the
Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC),
M.Sc. student Kelly Bowes is lucky
to be studying aromatic crops. She
says that she enjoys the smell of
her fields of dill, fennel,
coriander and basil, although the
smell of dill is an appetite
stimulant which makes her hungry.
Under the supervision of Dr.
Valtcho Jeliazkov, Kelly is
studying the feasibility of
growing aromatic plants as cash
crops in Nova Scotia. more

ascochyta blight, a fungal disease
that is also the bane of lentils. CDC researchers have worked with
plant breeding centres in the U.S., Australia,
Turkey and Syria to identify varieties with

Chewing the cud over edible vaccines
Vaccinating a large herd of beef cattle
is a tedious but necessary process,
involving a coordinated effort to ensure
every animal is treated adequately and
efficiently. But new developments in
edible vaccine technology could make the
painstaking procedure as uneventful as
cattle chewing their cud. more

Numbers
Tell West Nile Virus Story: Dr.
Tasha Epp always knew it was a question
of when — not if — a number of
Saskatchewan horses would become
infected with West Nile virus this
summer. But when the first trickle of
clinical cases came in August, even Epp
was caught off guard by the virus’
spread.

ranching is the popular
name for an innovative
research program in
sustainable landscape and
animal management systems.
Or as AFNS's Dr. Mick
Price, one of the lead
academics on the project,
says, "we're trying
to use modern electronic
communication technology
to ensure the right animal
is in the right place at
the right time."
